OVERVIEW

As part of the Action Centre’s Recreation Energy Conservation Program, the City of Lacombe completed an LED lighting retrofit throughout the Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex. The Sportsplex is an entertainment/public assembly building with an area totaling 125,000 ft2. The building is used for two skating rinks, a curling rink, change rooms, and a swimming pool.

The project was commissioned in September 2021.

APPROACH

The Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex lighting retrofit project included the replacement of existing 109 T5s with new LED highbays. The LED lamps will provide higher lumen levels at a much lower wattage, thereby reducing the electricity consumption of lighting equipment under the system boundary.

RESULTS

The lighting retrofit resulted in a reduction of 27 tCO2/year and an annual energy cost savings of $5,084.04. There is a 33% GHG reduction from the existing system and a 2% reduction facility-wide from the baseline.

“The Echo Energy and Echo Internet Arenas are a premier destination in our community. Council is pleased to see the City will be able to sustain that reputation, while at the same time providing an enhanced viewing experience and reducing costs.”

Grant Creasey, Mayor, City of Lacombe

“We’re excited to be using this technology. By implementing this new LED lighting system, we’ll be reducing the energy we use at the arenas while providing a better experience to our many user groups.”

Calvin Bennefield, Manager of Parks and Facilities, City of Lacombe
