Greenhouse gas emissions reductions for this project are calculated based on Alberta’s Carbon Offset Emission Factors Handbook Version 2.0

OVERVIEW

As part of the Electric Vehicles for Municipalities (EVM) program, the City of Lethbridge now has a new fully electric Zamboni 552 AC ice-resurfacer The City received $50,000 through the EVM program, which is funded by the Provincial government, to help cover a portion of the cost. The new ice-resurfacer will be replacing a dated 2009 Olympia Millennium gas model.

This project was funded by the Government of Alberta.

APPROACH

The new ice-resurfacer will join a growing fleet of EVs owned and operated by the City of Lethbridge. In addition to the ice-resurfacer the city also has a fully electric Chevrolet Bolt and a Polaris XP Ranger. The addition of the three EVs shows the City’s commitment to promoting a greener and more sustainable future.

RESULTS

The new electric Zamboni has several advantages compared to a traditional gas or propane unit:

  1. Reduced fuel costs – EVs are more efficient and are keeper to refuel.
  2. Reduced maintenance and maintenance costs – EVs have fewer moving parts.
  3. Reduced environmental impact – EVs produce no GHG emission during operation.
  4. Safer arena’s – EVs do not produce any emissions that can be harmful to building attendees.

Adding Electric Vehicles will reduce our consumption of fossil fuels, reduce or eliminate some of the maintenance requirements associated with internal combustion fueled vehicles and allow the City to continue to reduce environmental impacts associated with greenhouse gas emissions
