OVERVIEW
As part of the Action Centre’s Recreation Energy Conservation Program, the City of St. Albert completed an LED lighting retrofit throughout Servus Credit Union Place.
With over 320,000 square feet of leisure and fitness space, there is a children’s playground, fitness and wellness centre, and track. Servus Credit Union Place has three NHL-sized ice arenas – the Go Auto Arena, the Mark Messier Arena and the Troy Murray Arena. Aquatic Centre with over 25 spray and water features, including a river ride and two giant waterslides. The ice surfaces welcome skaters of all ages and abilities, the two soccer field houses are home to a variety of team sports and exercise classes.
The project was commissioned in May 2022.
APPROACH
The Servus Credit Union Place retrofit project included the replacement of 770 T5s, T8s, metal halides and pot lights with an equivalent number of LED downlights, highbays, and linear fixtures. The new LED lamps will provide higher lumen levels at a much lower wattage, thereby reducing the electricity consumption of lighting equipment under the system boundary.
RESULTS
The lighting retrofit resulted in a reduction of 262 tCO2/year and an annual energy cost saving of $44,640.11 thus decreasing electricity costs. There is a 62% GHG reduction from the existing system and a 4% reduction facility-wide from the baseline.
“The grant through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre enabled us to take immediate action in reducing our environmental footprint by replacing approximately 600 light fixtures with LED lighting in Servus Credit Union Place, the City’s main recreation facility. By implementing this energy conservation measure, we significantly reduced our electricity consumption, lowered our greenhouse gas emissions, and decreased our electricity bills by almost $44,000 becoming not only more environmentally sustainable, but also more fiscally sustainable.”
