Overview

In 2026, Cardston County completed a ground-mounted solar photovoltaic system serving the County Shop through the Municipal Electricity Generation Program. Supported by a $65,880.60 incentive toward the $219,602 project cost, the project strengthens the efficiency and resilience of a core public works facility.

Approach

D-Com installed 196 ground-mounted solar modules with 104.86 kW of total DC capacity. The system is designed to produce 1,330 kWhAC per kWDC and has an expected useful life of 25 years. The installation turns available municipal land into a long-term source of local electricity for County operations.

Results

The system is expected to generate 139,500 kWh of electricity and save approximately $43,942.49 each year. It is projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 68.45 tonnes of CO2e annually—about a 99% facility-wide reduction. The incentive improves estimated simple payback from 5.00 years to 3.50 years. The system helps the County manage operating costs, reduce exposure to future electricity-price changes, and demonstrate efficient, forward-looking investment in municipal infrastructure.

“This project reflects Council’s commitment to making thoughtful investments that deliver long-term value for our residents. By generating electricity locally, we are helping reduce operating costs while demonstrating practical leadership in sustainable municipal infrastructure.”

Randy Bullock, Cardston County Reeve
