Fairview Regional Aquatic Centre & Fitness Centre Energy Efficiency Upgrade – Town of Fairview

Overview

As part of the Action Centre’s Community Energy Conservation Program, the Town of Fairview completed an energy efficiency upgrade throughout the Fairview Regional Aquatic Centre and Fitness Centre.

Approach

The 17,450 square foot facility is located at 11219-95 Ave in Fairview, Alberta and includes a main pool area with a lap pool, leisure pool, and whirlpool, as well as changing rooms, admin and lifeguard offices, an activity room, and mechanical, electrical, and storage rooms. With support from the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre’s Community Energy Conservation Program, the Town replaced 159 outdated fixtures with high-efficiency LEDs, added four new smart thermostats, and replaced an aging rooftop unit with a high efficiency unit outfitted with heat recovery, significantly reducing energy consumption and operating costs.

The Town secured $310,967.47 in MCCAC funding to help cover the $518,279.11 project cost. Working with their contractors, the City undertook a comprehensive lighting retrofit at Medalta Potteries, replacing 412 T5 fluorescent and halogen fixtures with modern LED T5s and potlights. The new LED lighting provides improved illumination for galleries, exhibit spaces, and visitor areas while consuming a fraction of the electricity of the previous system. The project was carefully coordinated to minimize disruption to museum operations and visitor programming.

Results

The project is expected to save the Town of Fairview approximately $22,388.88 in energy costs each year, reducing electricity consumption by 71,898 kWh and gas by 2,328 GJ annually and cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 151.68 tonnes of CO₂e per year. The emissions reduction is an estimated 33.7% decrease from the baseline year prior to the retrofit. Over the approximately 15-year expected useful life of the project, an estimated 2,140 tonnes of CO₂e is expected to be prevented from entering the atmosphere. With these upgrades, the Aquatic Centre now offers a brighter, more energy-efficient environment for the thousands of visitors who visit each year.
