Overview
As part of the MCCAC’s Electric Vehicles for Municipalities (EVM) Program, the City of Cold Lake completed a study assessing the feasibility of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in their fleet. The City was looking to transition some of its fleet to either EV or Plug-in Hybrid EV. The feasibility study will help the City of Cold Lake make decisions in the future with regard to vehicles and acquiring the required charging stations needed to power the vehicles. It will also provide the City with insights as to what kind of electric vehicles are anticipated to be coming onto the market in the next few years. This study will enable the City of Cold Lake to examine the price, type of electric vehicles and charging stations available on the market and compare them with the municipality’s fleet of vehicles while providing a robust cost-benefit analysis for a variety of vehicles that are up for replacement in the future.
The City of Cold Lake has chosen to complete the EV vehicle feasibility study because the Municipality wants to be a leader in greenhouse gas emission reduction and to furthermore seek to increase energy savings. The City of Cold Lake is working towards adding EV vehicles into the fleet where ever we can have the most impact on energy reduction but without hindering operations. By completing the feasibility study, we have learned what types of chargers we would require, the types of vehicles available and what provincial and federal grant funding is available. We also have a better understanding of the energy profiles – usage at some of our facilities and the cost comparisons of EVs over Regular gas vehicles. We are excited to be a contributor to playing our part in greenhouse gas reduction.
