Greenhouse gas emissions reductions for this project are calculated based on Alberta’s Carbon Offset Emission Factors Handbook Version 2.0

In 2021, the City of St. Albert completed construction of their new solar PV installation, a 287.1 kW roof mount solar PV system at the Jack Kraft Public Works Facility. The system comprises 660 solar modules and is conservatively estimated to generate 301,455 kWh per year. The system allows the city to produce renewable energy, lower its carbon footprint, and lead by example in the community. The system received a rebate through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre’s Alberta Municipal Solar Program for $117,265.08.

The project was operational in 2021 and was constructed by SkyFire Energy. The expected annual electrical cost savings and rebate result in a simple payback period of 9 years against the 25-year minimum lifecycle of the solar array.

The system will offset about 171.83 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually, the equivalent of removing 38 passenger internal combustion engine vehicles driven for a year off the road.

Environmental stewardship is a priority for our city and the development of renewable energy opportunities is one of the actions we are taking to not only meet our greenhouse gas reduction goals but also reduce our contributions to climate change, this project is a big step forward.

City of St. Albert Mayor Cathy Heron

The Action Centre is proud to see the city utilize the Alberta Municipal Solar Program for a second time, communities like the City of St. Albert are leading the way in energy and emission reductions, demonstrating to Albertans that solar plays a key part in climate and economic resiliency.
