Greenhouse gas emissions reductions for this project are calculated based on Alberta’s Carbon Offset Emission Factors Handbook Version 3.2

Overview

As a part of the Community Energy Conservation (CEC) program, the City of St. Albert received a grant towards the purchase of a reusable arena sheet liner for the Jarome Iginla and Kinex Arenas, supplied by Goal To Goal Solutions Inc. The arena liner is a printed nylon mesh that decreases the time required to build up the ice. The liner is also non-insulative, which will allow the arena ice plant to operate at a higher set point, resulting in energy savings. The estimated annual energy savings is approximately 19,700 kWh, which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions annually by 9 tCO2e. The reusable arena liner also removes the need for ice paint, resulting in faster ice installation and the elimination of the environmental hazards that exist with ice paint.

Approach

The project was completed in 2026. This new arena liner is expected to reduce the ice set-up time by several days, reducing the load on the ice plant and the building’s electricity consumption. The liner is reusable and is expected to last 15 years.

Results

The arena liner is expected to reduce 9 tCO2/year and help to save $2,800/year.
