The Marwayne Arena underwent an energy efficiency retrofit in 2012 at the same time an addition to the building was completed.
Mechanical upgrades included both furnace and hot water heater replacements. The existing furnace was replaced with a two stage 95% efficiency unit. Unlike single-stage models that operate at full capacity, the new furnace adjusts output to match heating demand. The original 50% efficiency atmospheric combustion hot water heater was replaced with a gas fired pressurized combustion model (70%).
New weatherstripping was also installed and a lighting retrofit completed. The lighting upgrades included replacing 400W metal halide fixtures with 6 lamp T5-HO highbays, T12s fluorescent tubes with T8s, incandescent bulbs with CFLS, and incandescent exit sign lighting with LED lamps. The project savings from these upgrades are estimated to be $2,097, 194 GJ of energy, and 18 tonnes of CO2 annually.
