Overview
As part of the Action Centre’s Recreation Energy Conservation Program, the Municipal District of Greenview completed an installation of a 150 kW natural gas combined heat and power (CHP) unit.
The project was commissioned in May 2022.
What is CHP?
Also known as cogeneration, CHP systems merge the production of usable heat and electricity into a single process that can substantially reduce carbon emissions and energy costs. The combined heat and power units use gas turbines to generate electricity for onsite use while recovering waste heat from the generation process for pool heating, space heating, and domestic hot water.
Approach
Located in Grande Cache, AB, the Grande Cache Recreational Complex has a total floor area of 9,953 m2 (107,095 ft2). The building originally constructed circa 1970 consisted of a swimming pool, hockey arena/curling rink, office spaces, dressing rooms and concession area. A renovation in 2011 added another swimming pool common area, dressing rooms, a fitness area, a multipurpose room and office spaces. Electricity generated by the unit will displace grid electricity and heat recovered from the generation process will displace gas consumption, resulting in utility savings and reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the community.
Results
Installation of the unit will result in a reduction of 279 tCO2/year, which is a 14% GHG reduction facility-wide from the baseline. The project is also expected to save $106,055.30/year in energy costs.
Utilizing this new and innovative technology at the Grande Cache Recreation Centre is a win-win situation for Greenview. Not only are we reducing our operating costs long term, but we are also decreasing environmental impacts by reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.
