Municipal Energy Manager – Town of Rocky Mountain House

Overview

The Town of Rocky Mountain House received $76,968.48 in grant proceeds to offset the salary of a municipal energy manager. An energy manager works for a municipality to develop an energy management plan, implement energy saving opportunities, and realize energy savings.

This project was funded through the Municipal Energy Manager Program. This program is administered by the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre and funded by the Government of Alberta.

Results

Through the MEM Program, the Town of Rocky Mountain House accessed funding allowing them to hire an energy manager. Their energy manger was able to:

• assess the Town’s current energy consumption and energy management practices and identify the major energy users.
• develop an energy policy, energy team charter, and an energy management plan based on that assessment.
• identify potential low-cost, no-cost upgrades that can be easily implemented.
• Partner with Polar Engineering to submit a grant application to the Climate Ready Infrastructure Service (CRIS) for an efficiency and dehumidification study at the Co-operative Aquatic Centre.
• Identify opportunities to reduce energy costs and emissions for the Town, as well as an understanding of how its buildings are performing, thanks to completed benchmarking and assessments.

Benefits

The Town’s infrastructure is aging and challenging to operate efficiently. Through the program, the town became more proactive in management of aging facilities, potentially reducing emergency repairs and extending asset life. Additionally, the program empowered the town to increase the energy literacy of municipal employees and council by communicating key findings from the utility data benchmarking report.
