OVERVIEW
As part of the MCCAC’s Recreation Energy Conservation (REC) program, the Town of Valleyview completed a lighting retrofit of the Polar Palace Hockey Arena, updating over 300 fixtures to LED equivalents. The project was completed in February 2021.
APPROACH
The Polar Palace Hockey Arena lighting retrofit project included the replacement of all existing 339 T5 and T8 fluorescent fixtures throughout the facility with LED equivalents. The LED lamps will provide higher lumen levels at a much lower wattage, thereby reducing the electricity consumption of lighting equipment under the system boundary.
RESULTS
Due to the brighter LEDs, the Polar Palace Hockey Arena now gets more light out of their new fixtures, resulting in a 47% reduction in the facility’s lighting energy consumption. This retrofit is estimated to save 39 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year, equating to a 14% reduction in the facility’s carbon footprint.
47% reduction in lighting energy usage
Here’s what Mayor Vern Lymburner, Mayor of the Town of Valleyview had to say about the project and participating in the Recreation Energy Conservation Program:
“With this upgrade, we not only reduce our environmental impact, but we also reduce energy use and cost. With lower costs, we are able to keep the user fees lower which will help make the groups that utilize this facility more viable.”
