Overview

In 2022, the City of Edmonton completed construction of their new solar PV installation, a 31.05 kW roof mount solar PV system at the Strathcona Community League. The system comprises 69 solar modules and is conservatively estimated to generate 35,500 kWh per year. The system allows the City to produce renewable energy, lower its carbon footprint, and lead by example in the community. The system received a rebate through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre’s Alberta Municipal Solar Program for $22,510.50.

Approach

The project was operational in 2022 and was constructed by Generate Energy for $49,160.00. The expected annual electrical cost savings and rebate result in a simple payback period of 7.51 years against the 25-year minimum lifecycle of the solar array.

Results

The system will offset about 20.24 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually, the equivalent of removing four passenger internal combustion engine vehicles driven for a year off the road.
