OVERVIEW

As part of the MCCAC’s Electric Vehicles for Municipalities (EVM) Program, Strathcona County purchased two new fully electric Engo Ice Wolf Resurfacers. The total project cost was roughly $370,000 and the County received $100,000 from the MCCAC.

This project was funded by the Government of Alberta.

APPROACH

The new ice resurfacer will replace two outdated propane powered units. The new electric units will be cleaner, cheaper, and quieter, to operate.

RESULTS

The new electric Engo’s boast several advantages compared to traditional propane resurfacers:

  1. Reduced operational costs – Electric resurfacers are more efficient and cheaper to operate.
  2. Reduced maintenance costs – Electric resurfacers have fewer moving parts and therefore maintenance.
  3. Reduced indoor impact – The electric Engo’s will not produce any emission while in use indoors which is beneficial to people within the recreation centre.
  4. Reduced environmental impact – The electric Engo’s produce no GHGs during operation.

“Every action counts towards our shared environmental responsibilities. By switching to EV ice re-surfacers, we are reducing our environmental impact, saving money, and providing a safer and more enjoyable experience for our residents and visitors who use our arenas”

Mayor Rod Frank

“These new ice re-surfacers are much more efficient, cleaner and quieter than our old ones,”

James Thomas, Manager of Fleet Operations in Strathcona County.
