Supporting climate adaptation, resiliency, and risk reduction with the new Climate Adaptation Program

2-minute read

The Government of Alberta is investing in climate adaptation projects that will create good jobs for Albertans and will protect communities from the impact of severe weather changes.

On October 8, 2020, the Government of Alberta announced $4.5 million for the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre, a partnership of Alberta Urban Municipalities Association and Rural Municipalities of Alberta, to develop and administer the Climate Adaptation Program. This program will enhance the ability of Alberta municipalities and Indigenous communities to prepare for and respond to climate-related risks.

“Severe weather events, including floods and drought, have disrupted the lives of Albertans and our economy too often in recent years. The investments announced today will help protect communities against severe weather events, now and in the future, and support good jobs for Albertans.”

Jason Nixon, Minister of Environment and Parks

“We are eager to develop and administer the Climate Adaptation Program. With the Action Centre’s proven ability to move municipalities closer to their climate action goals, this program will see us support communities to better understand, cope, manage, and adjust to changing climatic conditions. The Action Centre will provide Alberta communities opportunities to broaden their climate adaptation literacy, assess climate vulnerabilities, and build climate adaptation plans. We look forward to launching the program in 2021.”

Trina Innes, Executive Director, Municipal Climate Change Action Centre

Extreme weather events associated with climate change are affecting Alberta’s water resources, ecosystems, buildings, and infrastructure. The Climate Adaptation Program will help Alberta municipalities and Indigenous communities better understand, cope, manage, and adjust to changing climatic conditions. It will provide communities with opportunities to broaden their climate adaptation literacy, assess climate vulnerabilities, build climate adaptation plans, and make progress on risk reduction strategies

The Municipal Climate Change Action Centre will launch program activities in 2021 that offer networking and outreach events, information resources and tools, as well as training, and one-on-one support for Alberta municipalities and Indigenous communities.

We thank the Government of Alberta for their support and look forward to diversifying our contribution to climate action in Alberta.
