Gathering Together for Climate Resilience

Community of Practice Symposium

After two years of online meetings, the Climate Resilience Capacity Building (CRCB) Program Community of Practice is gathering in person for the first time at the upcoming CRCB Community of Practice Symposium.

The in-person CRCB Community of Practice Symposium will be held in Edmonton on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Delta Hotel. Staff and leaders from municipalities and Indigenous communities in Alberta are invited to attend. This is an invitation-only event held the day before the ClimateWest Forum.

Eligible participants can inquire about registering for the CRCB Community of Practice Symposium, by emailing contact@mccac.ca.

What can you expect?

At the Symposium, we look forward to welcoming guest speakers to present on relevant topics, inviting peers from other local governments to share their experiences, and facilitating activities to foster connections and promote peer learning.

The Symposium will be a gathering for regional learning and collaboration with action-oriented sessions on climate adaptation & resilience planning and implementation within local governments.

Please join the CRCB Community of Practice and attend our Symposium to:

  • Connect with other local governments engaged in climate adaptation planning.
  • Address shared challenges and celebrate successes.
  • Learn from your peers as they share knowledge and experience.

The Climate Resilience Capacity Building program is funded by the Government of Alberta.

About the Community of Practice

In past meetings of the CRCB Community of Practice, participants from municipalities and Indigenous communities across Alberta engage in peer-to-peer learning on local climate adaptation practices and network with other community practitioners working on climate adaptation.

Members share the common goal of addressing the impacts of climate change on communities. Together, they are responding to the challenge of climate change by assessing climate risks in their communities, developing climate adaptation & resilience plans, and implementing adaptation measures. Members include staff and community leaders from municipalities and Indigenous communities & organizations across the province.

Since the beginning of our CRCB Community of Practice, the meetings have been a space for guest speakers, peer presentations, and facilitated discussion on topics centred around climate adaptation and community resilience, including the costs of inaction on climate change, climate communication, and cross-cultural engagement.

ClimateWest Forum: Building Climate Resilience

After the Symposium, participants are invited to join two more days of networking, knowledge sharing, and exploring innovative ideas to build climate resilience, at the 2024 ClimateWest Forum: Building Climate Resilience on May 8 and 9.

The ClimateWest Forum will bring together a wide range of sectors, communities, knowledges, and perspectives from across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. The theme for this year’s event is “Building Climate Resilience: Being prepared. Working together. Creating change.”

Sessions will explore how to build climate resilience in an inclusive, collaborative way.

Both the Symposium and the Forum are free to attend.
