Overview

The Town of Taber received $80,000 in grant proceeds for the completion of a Water System Master Plan.

Funding for this project was provided in part by the Government of Alberta, through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre’s Climate Resilience Capacity Building Program.

Approach

With a population of 9,000 and growing, the Town of Taber is known for its agricultural sector, sunny days, and the friendliness of a small town with the amenities of a larger community.

The Town contracted MPE Engineering to prepare a Water System Master Plan, including an assessment of the Town’s potable water system and it’s associated components: raw water supply system, treatment plant, storage, distribution pumping, and piped system.

This work was completed so that the Town can develop master plans for infrastructure and make decisions for capital project planning, such as infrastructure renewal or replacements, that will lower the risk of future climate factors.

The project assessed the climate resilience of Taber’s water system infrastructure, as well as the ability of that infrastructure to provide an acceptable level of service as the Town’s population continues to grow.

The assessment takes into account future growth of the Town, climate resilience, and recommendations for capital projects that will allow the Town to ensure adequate water supply to its residents and businesses.

Results

Through this project, the Town gained an understanding of the risk that flooding, drought, and high temperatures present to the Town.

In completing this assessment of the Town’s water system, Taber now has clear recommendations and priorities set for upgrades to the municipal water systems to minimize risks and safeguard the community.

Benefits

Equipped with this plan, the Town can now develop master plans for infrastructure and make decisions for capital project planning, such as infrastructure renewal or replacements, that will lower the risk of future climate factors.

“The Town of Taber is incredibly thankful to be able to take part in the Climate Resilience Capacity Building Program. This grant enabled us to complete our Water System Master Plan, which is a significant step toward ensuring our Town’s water infrastructure is prepared for future challenges. The plan not only enhances our resilience to climate change but also lays the groundwork for future improvements, securing a sustainable and reliable water system for generations to come.”
