Greenhouse gas emissions reductions for this project are calculated based on Alberta’s Carbon Offset Emission Factors Handbook Version 3.1

Overview

In 2024, the City of Edmonton completed the construction of its new solar PV installation, a 620 kW project on the Commonwealth Recreation Centre. The system comprises 1,128 solar modules and is estimated to generate 707,800 kWh per year. The system allows the city to produce renewable energy, lower its carbon footprint, and lead by example in the community. The system received a rebate through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre’s Alberta Municipal Solar Program for $372,240.

This project was funded by the Government of Alberta.

Approach

The project was operational in 2024 and was constructed by Great Canadian Solar and Clark Builders. The anticipated lifetime electricity cost savings are expected to be roughly $1,770,000 over the solar array’s minimum 25-year lifespan.

Results

The system will offset about 11.4 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually, the equivalent of removing two passenger internal combustion engine vehicles driven for a year off the road.

“The City of Edmonton is committed to becoming a climate resilient city,” said Mayor Amarjeet Sohi. “Using innovative technology, including the installation of solar photovoltaics on City-owned buildings, we are reducing greenhouse gas emissions and building a low-carbon city, protecting the environment for future generations.”

“Our government is focused on reducing costs and improving life for families and communities,” said Rebecca Schulz, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas. “We’re pleased to help fund a project that not only reduces emissions but also saves taxpayer money by lowering energy costs.”
