Big Lakes County Climate Resilience Action Plan

Big Lakes County, through the preparation of this Action Plan, is taking steps towards a safe, prosperous and resilient future. The Action Plan identifies several anticipatory measures to manage priority risks and opportunities anticipated to result from climate change in the area over the next several decades.

Scope

Spatial scope – the geographic boundaries of Big Lakes County.

Operational scope – potential community-wide impacts, which includes impacts to municipal infrastructure, property and services, as well as impacts to private property, the local economy, the health and lifestyle of residents and the natural environment.

Risks

10 climate-related risks identified.

3 risks judged priority for action – Wildfire, Drought, Excessive moisture and flooding.

Opportunities

8 climate-related opportunities identified, 1 judged as a priority requiring immediate action.

Growing season (longer); Winter recreation; Heating cost (reduced); Agricultural feed (reduced costs); Grazing season (longer); In-migration, Longer construction season; Reduced winter road maintenance.

Actions

18 actions identified (for 3 priority risks only).

Social Equity

Heat stress on people – Increased stress on vulnerable populations (e.g. elderly) from extreme heat.

Opportunity for Indigenous-municipal collaboration. In addition to Big Lakes County, the lead party responsible for implementing several actions includes neighbouring municipalities, First Nations, or Metis communities.
