OVERVIEW

As part of the Action Centre’s Electric Vehicles for Municipalities (EVM) Program, Red Deer County purchased a new Kia Niro electric vehicle. The Kia Niro will be used for employee transportation around the County or to other meetings in the region and will reduce the business use of personal staff vehicles and limit mileage claims. This project was completed in September 2022.

APPROACH

The County’s new Kia Niro EV has replaced an older Dodge Journey, leading to greenhouse gas emissions reductions of over 57% after including emissions from electricity production in Alberta. The County also received funding from the Electric Vehicle Charging Program that will be used to charge the Niro EV.

RESULTS

By switching to an electric vehicle, the County will be reducing operational emissions, leading to a reduction in environmental impact, as well as significantly lower fuel and maintenance costs. The Kia Niro is expected to reduce overall emissions by 57 per cent compared to the previously used Dodge Journey and cut annual fuel and maintenance costs by an estimated $3,500 per year.
